I recently had a hall mirror fall and the glass and frame broke. After a couple days seeing it ready to go in the garbage I decided to embrace the Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi and in particular it’s common artistic form of Kintsugi. I repaired the cracked mirror with a gold seam to bind the crack and I repaired the broken corner by daming and pouring plaster around it and hand carving all the frame detail back before then gilding it. Now this wasn’t really worthy of posting here I didn’t think, but I really enjoyed carving the plaster so I saved a “puck” of hardened plaster that I had leftover to maybe sometime carve something.
So last week a noreaster knocked the power out and sans distraction carving seemed like a fun thing to try my hand at. It took a very long time, much of it by candle light, but I’m really quite happy with the results!
Here it is hanging on my wall:
And here’s that fixed frame, nothing too fancy, but I like it!
